Coaching and Mentoring in Organizations (OLS 58300)

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course explores issues and practices in technologically-driven organizations pertaining to the roles and functions that coaching and mentoring play in employee development. A “best practices” approach, utilizing the case method, is emphasized. Presented from the point of view of a human resource manager/leader, the focus of the course is on identifying coaching opportunities, enhancing communication skills, developing and implementing coaching and mentoring strategies, and evaluating the outcomes of these strategies. Attention is directed to facilitating personal coaching mentoring skills. You may download a copy of the syllabus here.

ASSIGNMENTS AND ASSESSMENTS

Peer Coaching Experience

Each student will be paired with other students in the class. Together you will take turns coaching and being coached by one another. You will do this in multiple pair configurations throughout the term. Class time will be devoted to this activity. Your efforts as a coach will be evaluated by those you coach.

Coaching Journal

You will also keep a coaching journal in which you reflect on your experiences as a coach and as the person being coached. You will also be expected to integrate and reference course materials and other evidence-based coaching resources.

Organizational Coaching Strategies

You may pick from two different options to fulfill this assignment. One option is to develop an organizational coaching strategy the other is to develop an evaluation plan for an organizational coaching strategy.

Your lived experiences and your thoughts and reactions to our course content are of great value. Your voice and perspective are important in building our collective understanding of our texts and course content. To that end, your participation grade will be based on:

  • Being a valuable participant in group activities
  • Coming to class prepared, which means you’ve done the reading and brought assigned texts and notes to class with you
  • Remaining focused during class meetings
